  • Recruitment – HACU attracts a qualified pool of applicants through visits to Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), a targeted direct mail campaign, attendance at conferences, responses to student and agency inquiries, and an informational HNIP web page.
  • Employment Administration – HACU receives, screens, processes, and matches student applications with internship assignments provided by supervisors.  In addition, HACU processes payroll and manages housing deductions for federal agency interns.
  • Housing – HACU works with federal agency supervisors and interns to arrange safe, furnished, affordable housing near public transportation.  Housing costs are the responsibility of the intern.  Corporations work with corporate interns to secure housing if applicable.
  • Travel – Roundtrip airfare is arranged and provided at no charge to federal interns. Corporations work with corporate interns in making travel arrangements if applicable.
  • Orientation – HACU conducts a two-day orientation in Washington, DC for federal interns before they report to their internship assignments.  Corporations will inform corporate interns for orientation schedules if applicable.
  • Extra-curricular Activities – HACU enhances the interns’ professional and personal growth through monthly meetings, cultural events, networking opportunities, and skill development workshops.
  • Student and Supervisor Support Services – HACU provides program handbooks and maintains frequent communication with federal interns and supervisors.
  • Evaluation – HACU conducts program and intern performance evaluations.  A final report is compiled and submitted to each participating federal agency.  The report includes an intern profile and feedback from interns and supervisors.
  • Academic Credit – HACU works with students and their academic advisors or deans to ensure that appropriate documentation and procedures are in place to allow the home institution to award credit.
