Interning in D.C.
By Leonardo Gorito National Office-OCLT
My name is Leonardo Gorito, and I am a summer intern for the Procedures and Program Development Branch at OCWC. I am originally from Brazil, and I am an Economics/International Area Studies major at the University of California, Los Angeles. This week is my fourth week as an intern, and I am really enjoying my experience here at BLS as well as my stay in D.C.
My work at BLS primarily comprises online research. My main responsibility is to gather up-to-date information about different topics related to wages and benefits, including health care reform, domestic partner benefits, pension funding requirements, overtime rules, state unemployment insurance, and minimum wage. Not only have I been improving my research skills, but I have also been learning a lot about all these topics.
As far as the city is concerned, I fell in love with Washington, D.C. the first time I visited last year. This time was no different. There is so much to do and see in D.C., such as museums, monuments and festivals. I have also had the opportunity to attend a Congressional breakfast with Congressman Pierluisi. It is a combination of the city, the internship, and special events that is making my summer in D.C. a memorable one. I am looking forward to learning and experiencing much more during my stay in D.C.
