A Welcome to New Interns
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program (HNIP) was created in 1992 in efforts to extend opportunities for Hispanic students.
As of June 10th, thirty-four interns came aboard the Forest Service for a 10-week long session. These interns were placed in Washington D.C or in field offices around the nation.
The Forest Service works with organizations like HACU to provide opportunities and experiences to young individuals attending college who seek job experience and opportunities with the federal government. Ultimately, the program serves as a recruitment tool for the agency. The agency allows these talented individuals to gain knowledge and skills in a range of fields such as engineering, biology, public affairs, law enforcement, civil rights, research, and many more fields within the agency.
Many students are new to the program, but some are returning interns that are enthusiastic in participating to gain new learning experiences. Also, some students will utilize this experience as a possible doorway to future employment. All were excited to participate in the hopes of learning about how the federal government and various offices work to provide assistance and services to the public.
The students had the privilege during their orientation to meet Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Forest Service Chief Abigail Kimbell. Secretary Vilsack and Chief Kimbell spoke briefly about the agency and welcomed the students to Washington.
