Jorge Urby

My name is Jorge H. Urby; I was born and raised in Del Rio, a small town in Southwest Texas.  Now I find myself wide eyed in the nation’s capital after being selected last summer to participate in the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Internship Program.    I had been trying to find an internship opportunity in Washington, D.C. for about five months when a friend of mine told me about HNIP.  I can without a doubt say that the decision to apply truly changed my life.  I had never really left Texas except for a brief stint in which I lived in Mexico.

As my internship experience at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration was winding down, I was offered a full-time position.  I decided to accept it and subsequently began to pursue a master’s degree at American University.  Applying to HNIP is an opportunity that I try to share with whoever will listen.  The HACU staff works very hard to make sure that you gain as much from the experience as possible.   For me, coming to D.C. has been an amazing experience, not only for the internship part, but also for the experiences I gained while traveling, networking, and meeting new people from all walks of life.

Meet Alejandro Manzanares Cainas

I, like many students of the world, study at my university and live at home. After this experience I realized how important it is to step out of what has always been normal and routine and expand, take risks without fear. Full Story >
