After earning my Master’s degree, I really wanted to work in Washington, DC.  The HNIP internship gave me that and much, much more.  I will never forget working as a HACU intern for the Western Hemisphere Region section of the Federal Aviation Administration’s International Programs Office.  Immediately accepted and respected, I was relied upon as a team member for issues dealing with civil aviation throughout the Americas. On a daily basis I gathered research related to international air safety and cooperation, attended meetings with various section chiefs, and used Spanish for translating documents and dealing with foreign counterparts. In addition to this valuable experience, I learned much about the government via a number of intern-related activities and presentations.  Being in DC also impacted me very positively.  Meeting people working in all kinds of national and international activities taught me a lot and I truly enjoyed the wide breadth of cultural offerings that our capitol has to offer.

Now, I use my education and valuable intern experience in North Africa where I teach first and second year students at the University of Algiers.  My HNIP experience in DC has given me added confidence and knowledge to teach Yemenis, Algerians, and others eager to learn about America.  Dealing with foreign counterparts and experiencing new cultures are now a significant part of my everyday reality and the HNIP internship helped better prepare me for that context.”
Miguel Conchas was selected as an English Language Fellow for the past two academic years by the Department of State and Georgetown University.   From October 2006 to July 2007, he completed a 10-month Fellow position at the University of Aden, AMIDEAST in Yemen.  Under this year’s fellowship, he is teaching at the University of Algiers in Algeria until July 2008.
