Karen Serrano

Being a HACU intern has been an amazing experience. Working for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has taught me more about my field, career choices, and the federal government. My mentor was very supportive of enhancing my learning experience and encouraged me to attend training sessions, meetings addressing mental health and substance abuse, and also participate in historical and educational tours. During my time here, I have had the opportunity to meet Senator Dianne Feinstein and her legislative staff, meet with individuals from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and learn more about our nation’s capital. There are endless activities and opportunities available for interns to pursue. My advice: Make the most out of this internship by working hard and pursuing your academic and personal interests. Many organizations have their national headquarters out here, such as the Red Cross and Peace Corps; find ways to make a contact by networking…the possibilities here are limitless.
